Complete Transparency on My Sustainability Efforts

I've been asked a lot more and thus talking a lot more about sustainability recently, and so I want to cover the topic in more depth and share the fundamentals  of my own sustainability efforts.

Living in the World that we do, and in the state that it is, it is nearly impossible to live sustainably 100% of the time. This is something I have trouble coming to terms with, as, despite my best efforts, there are always things on which I could improve or wish I could avoid. However, the reality is, unless we retreat to the countryside or relocate to the jungle and live as completely self-sufficient beings, in self-built homes, wearing self-made clothes and eating self-grown produce, we're never going to be as sustainable or eco-friendly as we'd like to be. Things have simply gone too far.

In centuries gone by, we were doing pretty good, but with the introduction of all kinds of technology, we discovered ways to make things much easier for ourselves, and apparently either didn't fully understand or didn't care enough about the consequences these things would have on our environment, experiences and ultimately our evolution. We live in an age where we can have what we want, whenever we want it. This of course has its benefits and is a wonderful way to live, but it doesn't come without its side effects. We have become complacent, much lazier and are producing far more things and far more waste than ever before. We are consuming more than we need to, and the processes involved in the mass-production required to meet our constant needs and demands are often highly toxic, unethical and unsustainable; affecting the environment and the state of our land, our air, our oceans and our ecosystem, along with the welfare of people involved in production and the welfare of us, as consumers of lower quality products (especially when it comes to food).

I dream of a time when - although tougher and of course less luxurious - people had limits. A time when people would grow their own foods or buy from local suppliers and accept that when something wasn't available, they could go without. A time when clothes were made better and, although more expensive, would be more of a luxury or in some ways, more meaningful. If you didn't like something enough, you wouldn't buy it, or if you couldn't find something you liked, you could take the time to make something yourself. This time I dream of seemed much simpler. Alright, we didn't have half the things we depend on and enjoy most in the modern day, but we got by just fine without them, and our environment suffered considerably less. There were less products, less advertising for things we don't really need, and less options. We made do with what we had, and that was enough. Chances are, we were happier too. Some of the poorest countries and cultures I have experienced are some of the happiest, and I am passionate about finding ways to simplify our modern lives so we can live with less, do less and enjoy ourselves, our time and our planet more.

Whilst I am no saint when it comes to sustainability, I try to live as naturally and consciously as possible. In making several sacrifices and taking time to discover ways to swap modern essentials for more natural necessities, I am doing my bits, however small they may be.

Modern-day materials and more eco-friendly alternatives

To me, beyond just generally consuming and buying less, the materials involved in the things I do buy are of major importance to me. In general, a non-biodegradable material is anything that air, sunlight, water, and ground soil cannot break down. There are many manufactured / synthetic materials which are non-biodegradable, but are favoured for being cheaper and easier and quicker to produce. Of those, plastic and cotton most commonly come under widespread scrutiny. Here's a few flash notes on why, and some more eco-friendly and sustainable suggestions.

Plastic uses gallons of water to produce. It takes more water to produce a plastic bottle than the amount of water that it in it.

Plastic, if not recycled and reused, takes years to decompose and biodegrade. Once you throw away something made of plastic, it will sit in landfill or end up in the Oceans, killing the sea life by polluting their habitats, getting ingested or physically harming them in other ways. There is a figure floating around (excuse the pun) that by the year 2050, there will be more plastic than fish in the sea. I'm not sure how they can determine this or how likely it is, but I'd say its enough to make you think twice about using so much plastic, and about how you dispose of it.

The process of making plastic (which is made of polypropylene - a material composed of petroleum and gas) requires lots of energy, involves non-renewable fossil fuels and contributes to the level of greenhouse gases in the environment. 

Cotton is another concern. It requires a lot of water to produce, and is commonly heavily treated with pesticides, unless organic. 

Paper. We all know what's happening to the rainforests. Although it biodegrades, and is easier to recycle, paper still requires a lot of water and wood to produce, and our rainforests can't grow fast enough to keep up with the demand.

There are plenty of other materials - such as styrofoam, polyester, cans and tins, rubber, nylon, cellophane to name a few - that we should also be conscious about using, and serious about cutting down on.

So, what's good?

Other plants, such as bamboo, are generally more sustainable, renewable and more efficient options. Bamboo doesn't require any pesticides, and it is self-replenishing. 1/3 of the amount of water is needed to grow bamboo than is required to grow cotton. 1 acre of bamboo yields 10 times more than 1 acre of cotton. Bamboo is also much more absorbent than cotton and is stronger, meaning its more efficient in serving the purposes we tend to use cotton for.

Bamboo can be used in a solid form to replace plastic, and its fibres can also be used in fabrics and materials for things like clothes, furniture, packaging and more.

Organic cotton is also better than standard cotton, as there is no use of pesticides or other chemicals in the production process. It is cleaner, and better for the environment, but it still uses a lot of water, energy and labour to produce. If un-dyed, cotton biodegrades, which is why its best to buy organic as it is safer and cleaner to biodegrade.

Plant fibres such as hemp, flax, coconut (coir), sisal, jute, silk/wild/peace silk, pineapple (Piñatex), beech tree (modal) and many more make really great alternatives to cotton and can be used to make things like clothes, shoes, furniture and other materials. I also love tencel which is made from wood pulp fibres.

Linen is one of the most biodegradable fabrics used in fashion items. Try to buy it un-dyed as it is fully biodegradable that way.

Using recycled materials is also good, but it does require a lot of energy, especially up-cycling things like plastic. With clothing, buying second-hand and customising or altering something is a great way to give new life to unwanted clothes.

Obviously, to be 100% sustainable, you would have to stop buying things all together. Even these natural fibres will contribute in some way to pollution through processing and will eventually end up as waste, but the good thing is they will biodegrade much more efficiently. Things made with natural fibres tend to cost more too; you are ultimately paying that little bit extra for more careful and ethical practices, for better quality clothes and to support smaller businesses and their authentic morals.

My Sustainability Efforts and Practices

Like I said, it would be impossible to live completely sustainably and self-sufficiently in this day and age, and I am absolutely not trying to act like I do or come across as perfect and flawless at it. I want to be completely transparent here. I still use a lot of products and have several habits (not to mention jobs) which are not environmentally friendly, but the main thing is I am cutting down on them and making major swaps wherever and whenever I can. Here's the area's I'm making most headway with, as well as those in which I am not quite there yet. 

Beauty

I do use make up and skincare products that aren't entirely natural, vegan, organic or ethical, but i prefer to use things that are at least one of those things. My skincare and beauty routines are not 100% clean or perfect, mainly because as a model I don't have complete control over what products are used on me from one day to the next. Also, at home, there are products I've been using for years which I just love. However, I am more conscious when using them, and choose to use natural, eco-friendly, organic and ethical products much more than these artificial/non-eco products. Products made without artificial chemicals, parabens, micro beads and other fillers are not only better for the environment but also for your skin.

I would also suggest using wooden earbuds instead of plastic earbuds, as well as wooden or metal razors, instead of single use/disposable razors.

+ Go a step further and find products that are packaged in recyclable, refillable or biodegradable packaging.

Style + Clothing

Whilst I prefer to buy second hand/vintage or small-batch/handmade/natural fibre fashion items, I'm not going to pretend I never shop at places like Topshop, Zara, H&M, Forever 21, etc etc. I really do. Not often, but occasionally. And I'm always wearing and promoting brands that aren't always ethical or sustainable in my line of work as a model. But that doesn't mean I approve, it's just part of the job.

Most of the time I try just to not buy new clothes, because I don't really need them. However, from time to time something will catch my eye or I will need something for specific traveling conditions, and if I can't always find (or afford) clothes made from natural fibres, or second hand clothes, I will end up on the high street; although I don't buy something unless I really, really love it.

I have recently felt particularly unfulfilled with pieces I've bought from high street brands, as many of them either need altering or have something about them that I'dd like to change. They rarely feel perfect. And they always seem over-priced and quite often poorly made. Not to mention, everyone ends up buying and wearing the same things. Its far more special to buy a unique second-hand piece or items made to order or in limited batches from more artisan producers. Clothes like these also feel so much better. There is more life and character in them, not to mention you are either giving back to charity, or saving things from going to waste. It's literally all good. 

Food + Diet

I try to eat plant based as much as possible, mostly due to the environmental side effects associated with the production of meat. However, I am not 100% vegan all of the time; I have a flexible approach to eating and try not to put too much pressure on myself if I can help it.

I try to avoid meat and fish, eating it probably once a week, max. This is mainly due to the amount of water, feed and land that is required to raise livestock and produce meat and animal products, which is not very environmentally friendly, and also the state of commercial fishing, which produces a lot of waste which ends up in the ocean.

I try to shop locally and in bulk to avoid unnecessary packaging, but this isn't always possible and I do end up in my local Tesco from time to time. I avoid packaged items as much as possible but sometimes have to grin and bear it and hope it will all end up recycled. Makes me feel better anyway.

Travel

I travel a lot with my job, and that is certainly not an eco-friendly habit. Flying is pretty bad but unfortunately can't be avoided. I love travelling too much. I try to balance it out by taking buses instead of cars and trains, and, whenever possible, I always schedule in extra journey time so I can get to places by foot or by bike.

My new favourite online vintage destination is One Scoop Store. The founder buys all her (mostly designer) stock second-hand from charity shops, markets, car boots or private clients who have surplus clothing. Her mission is to reduce landfill and reduce the amount of clothes being thrown away by finding items a new owner. I got some incredible Gucci loafers and a hoop top which I'll share soon. 

I'm trying this next week and I can't freaking wait. My Mum has been having regular treatments for about a year now and I don't know why I didnt think to try it sooner. It sounds amazing, is all-natural and apparently reduces visibility of pores and strength of hairs over time (also reduces the risk of ingrown hairs too ewww)

Aquafaba mayonnaise is about to change your life. Made with the water from cooked chickpea (tinned is best), it is one of the easiest things I've ever made and so, so needed to see any vegans or anyone more preferable to plant based food through barbecue season.

Sunlight Therapy and How To Have Safe Sun

If you're anything like me, you'll have a tendency to gravitate outside at the first sight or sense of sunshine. I am a sun baby through and through; I could basque in it - literally soak it into every pore of my body - until it goes down. When it's not sunny, I feel low, but as it rises day in day out, I always tend to rise with it (regarding my sleeping patterns are as they should be and not disrupted by stress or other factors).

It fascinates me why we are all (mostly) drawn to and addicted to the Sun. It enlivens the senses; it governs many natural bodily functions, such as sweating, hydration, metabolism and mental wellbeing; and it permits more time outside, meaning more fresh air, more nature and more freedom out of the constant confines of an office and / or home. Our modern lifestyles are predominantly based inside, exposed to artificial lights and screens, and it's thought that these conditions may encourage and even worsen Seasonal Affective Disorder. So, seriously, make a conscious effort to get outside a few times a day (that doesn't include your commute).

The Pros

The sun triggers the production of endorphins, which just make us feel good.

Vitamin D. You all know about that.

The Sun is energising. Its rays and the frequency of its energy is absorbed into our cells and fuels our internal systems. In other words, it boosts the metabolism and feeds our internal processes.

A surge in metabolic power can have domino effects on nearly everything else going on within. From how we break down energy from food and how strong our immune systems are to the behaviour of brain chemicals and other substances that contribute to mood, weight, energy and more.

It increases positivity and elevate low moods. As well as endorphins, we produce higher levels of serotonin when exposed to more sunlight, a chemical / neurotransmitter believed to help regulate mood, appetite and digestion, sleep, memory, and sexual desire and function. It is known to reduce anxiety, stress and depression. Think of it as Sunlight Therapy.

It brings people together more. When the Sun is out - especially in the UK as it's so rare - there is a stronger sense of community and connection. People gather more frequently to and generally spend longer together, as the days are longer and lighter.

Sunlight can also help regulate sleeping patterns. With more exposure to light, the sleep hormone melatonin is more efficient and we tend to produce more of it, meaning we sleep better and at more natural times, which may mean we're able to wake more easily too.

The Cons

Over exposure to the Sun has been linked with accelerated aging.

Over exposure to the Sun has also been linked with risk of developing skin cancer.

In warm, humid climates, dehydration is a common side effect of too much time spent in the Sun. This includes dry skin as well as internal thirst. Drink more than you usually would and moisturise like you mean it.

Overuse of sun protection can lead to greasy, oily skin and clogged pores (choose a natural one, for this reason if nothing else).

Below are a few summertime beauty products I've tried and loved or have been recommended recently; most are natural, organic, free of parabens and other nasty chemicals and / or ethical in some way, but some are a little guiltier. I use a combination, depending on where I am, what my skin is doing and what kind of skincare support I need in each present moment.

Lily of The Detox Kitchen just released a new book, an homage to vegetables.

This app. I'm planning to start using it to recycle old or unwanted clothes that I don't have time to eBay or Depop, or that just aren't worth much anymore. 

My favourite smoothie just had an upgrade. I tend to make some variation of a banana, nut butter, spinach, innermost vegan protein, maca, rhodiola, ashwaganda, ice and a pinch of himalayan pink salt most days before or after a workout. Last month I got my hands on a batch of The Well Co's Super Elixir, and have been adding it to my daily smoothies, or stirring it into a glass of water if short of time. Hands down my favourite greens powder. Much lighter, more tasty and less earthy than the others I've tried.

A friend just introduced me to the idea of using one of these for lose leaf tea. 

Last week, I visited Santorini for the first time. It instantly became one of my favourite places, with its unique and effortlessly chic architecture, warm weather, beautiful views, black beaches and friendly locals, to name just a few pros. We stayed at the Santo Maris in Oia; an idyllic resort perched at the top edge of the island, with beautiful architechture, a spa, a buffet of fresh, local produce, 4 private pools and the best sunset watching spot on the island.

Currently addicted to Equinox. Last week I joined their flagship gym in Kensington and have been navigating their huge selection of apparatus and other facilities every since. I also tried their WORKX class - a combination of treadmill intervals and weight work - which almost killed me. Full blog post to follow shortly.

Last week someone on Instagram asked me how I found time to read. My answer was, I make time. I rarely succeed, but recently I have become more conscious of taking time to do not only something for myself, not only something relaxing and meditative, but also something nourishing for the mind, brain and soul. Learning is expanding, and even if you prefer fiction to factual, reading stands as an (if only momentary) escape from the stresses of modern life. Do it! And if you're into spirituality, holistic teachings and traditions and the power to heal, I'd highly recommend this already and I'm only just past the preface.

Time to take a holiday and stop feeling bad for it.

Just finished reading 'The Power of Now' by Eckhart Tolle which I bought years ago and have only just gotten around to opening. Highly recommend it for anyone intrigued by or already embarking on a more spiritually influenced journey.

Mango Committed. Nice to finally see some high street / mainstream brands making small conscious changes. Hopefully it will help educate the masses about the ramifications of fast fashion, and evolve to make up the majority of their collections in the not too far future.

The Mind Body Green podcast; most recently enjoyed their episode The Biggest Myths About Gut Health with Dr Vincent Pedre.

Have loves incorporating Wild Nutrition supplements into my daily routines. Their Premenstrual complex is incredible for reducing PMS, and I've also been taking Magnesium to help sleep whilst travelling as well as Ashwaganda for general stress and tension reduction. 

I almost can't wait for some rain so I can wear these Ilse Jacobsen boots.

My mum sent my sisters and I this a few weeks ago. Cheesy but thought provoking. Moral of the story: don't work your life away.

Since my agency decided I look much better with a tan, I've been working my way through some self tanning products; some more natural / organic or ethical than others. If you want a pre holiday glow, I've most enjoyed Tan Luxe / Espa / James Read Tanning Mist, so far.

Reducing plastic - tell us more about your contribution and passion for this mission, and give us a few simple tips for effortless changes that anyone can make today: 
Stop for a minute and think about how many times you interact with plastic in your day and see where you could do without. See where you could instead be using re-usable containers, or chose to buy from different brands or even just opt to say no to things.

Girl Boss Radio, an long standing favourite podcast of mine, spoke with Miranda Kerr about the fashion industry, wellbeing and making the shift from money making top model to start up entrepreneur, founder, managing director and everything in between. As a model and entrepreneur myself, it really inspired me and I'd recommend this to any model navigating a new path, as well as non-models into wellbeing and the idea of entrepreneurship. It was super inspiring to hear Miranda's journey as until now I'd assumed she'd put her name on the brand and had other organisations running it on her behalf. Not the case at all.

Just finished this book, and would highly recommend it to anyone creative entrepreneurs or anyone interested in starting their own business. It discusses the basics of business but in a way more creative bohemian types can understand and engage with, and also puts the business world into a more purposeful perspective, offering that it is possible to create a meaningful business with true purpose and passion amidst a money-hungry and success-driven industry of large, impersonal and inauthentic corporations (blog post on this coming soon).

Last week I took an afternoon (ok, only about 1 hr) off to visit the Tate Modern to see the Picasso exhibition. As a self employed entrepreneur (that's the last time i use that word in this post), I am constantly working and doing and feel guilty every time I rest or take a break, but I recently thought to myself that the whole reason I like to be self employed is that it gives me freedom to do what I want. I fully surrendered to this and gave myself permission to do something I purely wanted to do, and it was so fulfilling. Most of the time, it is just about permission. We live in an age where we are constantly conditioned to strive and succeed, so taking time off to do things we really enjoy and that sweetens the soul is not something many of us feel entitled to (especially not during work hours). Making conscious efforts to replace things in my home with versions made from more natural materials. I’ve given all my plastic clothes hangers to charity and replaced them with affordable wooden ones, and this month I got some linen bed covers. Linen is created from the flax plant, a multi–faceted and renewable resource, making it a more eco friendly alternative to bleached or processed fabrics, as it is totally biodegradable. Turkish hammam towels are my new thing. 

I keep my daily make up look pretty toned down and minimal - very fresh, warm and natural - which is pretty low maintenance.  I don’t change up my make up products or routines much unless something really revolutionary, or more natural, comes along. Until last week, I'd been buying the same liquid eyeliner since I started using liquid eyeliner. But I recently tried a few products by Bare Minerals, and their liquid eyeliner is both revolutionary and natural, and immediately overthrew my former favourite. If you’re a liquid eyeliner kinda person, you may not think you need this, but you really do.

I recently connected with the team over at Ecoage - a brand consultancy founded by Livia Firth that helps businesses to grow sustainably, by creating, implementing and communicating sustainability solutions. They run such inspiring initiatives and projects, including the #30Wears, #TheGreenCarpetChallenge and The Commonwealth Fashion Exchange, based on collaboratively curated garments which take into consideration the supply chain, natural recycled or renewable materials and ethical work and labour practices. All best stories are probably quite inappropriate actually :). But what I can share with you is how I learnt Tokyo is my happy place. When I went there for the second time, I was travelling from Tokyo to Kyoto on the bullet train and I was staring through the window at mount Fiji, and I just suddenly started to cry. I realised that for the first time in my life I was crying out of pure happiness. Since them it has happened to me 3 times more; always in Tokyo :).

Favourite or recently discovered wellness product(s) or tool(s):
Himalayan pink salt lamp; helps me to sleep and purifies the air.

Favourite or recently given or received piece of advice / quote / mantra:
Meditate an hour every day, unless you don’t have time - then meditate for 2 hours.

Something you live by - a mantra or general morals:
Life starts outside of your comfort zone; I tell it to myself every time I board a plane as I hate flying but have to travel often.

Beauty tip / rituals:
Relaxing baths with Epsom salts - at least twice a week.

Illness remedy:
Boiled water with fresh ginger, lemon and raw honey. I do not believe in popping pills. I believe in more holistic approaches and have a great respect for Chinese medicine. I travel to China often and love to visit their pharmacies, which actually look like more like herb shops.

Tips for sounder sleep:
Affirmation pod and a Himalayan salt lamp.

Movement:
Whenever I travel, I don’t always have time to properly exercise, but everyday I try to do a 7 minute HIIT workout; you download an app and it can literally be done anywhere, anytime.

Favourite or recently discovered place for ultimate chill time:
Monocle cafe on Chiltern street; Monocle is my fave magazine and this little cafe is like a corner of heaven on Earth for me.

Favourite or recently discovered healer / bodyworker:
I have a physio in Guangzhou, China who I visit every 3 months. He is a magician and recently fixed my twisted ankle. 

Favourite or recently discovered wellness cafe / restaurant / store:
One of my all time favourite places is a South Korean jjimjilbad. They are female-only public bathhouses where you can spend endless hours. They have hot springs, beauty rituals, cafes, sleep places and the best full-body scrub I have ever experienced. They are great to visit alone or to hang out with friends. My favourite one is Spa Lei in Gangnam.

Favourite healthy food / drink:
Matcha; I get mine from Tokyo fish market overtime I go there since the quality is so much better.

Work / life balance advice:
I love my work and I do it with so much pleasure and passion that I don’t feel I need a clear balance between work and ‘normal’ life.

Business advice - how do you remain mindful and conscious whilst successfully growing a business with a purpose:
When I started COSSAC I made a list of values/priorities and wrote answers to 3 questions in regards to my business: Why? How? What? I try to stay true to what I believe in and constantly reevaluate my actions and progress and make changes accordingly.

Favourite tip for instantly reducing stress:
Close your eyes and count to 10. My mom brought me that.

Spiritual practise (if any):
Affirmation/meditation and of course, travel.

First thing you do every morning:
Moan. I am not a morning person.

Last thing you do every evening:
Meditate.

Weekend rituals:
Yoga, long walks and visiting markets; I love supporting local traders and learning new things from others. I also travels a lot. Sometimes I book a trip very last minute and just go away for the weekend to disconnect.

Gift guide for conscious consumers

Gifts are always nice, but they're even nicer if they have the ability to do good for more than the person receiving them. Below is a selection of items that I've enjoyed either physically, through windows or during a session of screen scrolling. Some make great gifts, some make the perfect stocking fillers and others wouldn't hurt as a little present / Holiday season outfit for yourself.

Some of these products are ethically and sustainably made (in ingredients, materials and methods) and some share proceeds with charities, whilst others are just nice but not especially impactful. Some come from brands which have regenerative and environmental concerns at heart, and some come from small start-up brands, whilst others come from much larger organisations (boo, but, 21st century living). Whilst I try to shop sustainably most of the time, the selection can sometimes be limited and, therefore, I do find purpose and pleasure in less ethical brands and products from time to time. We Are Women . Moon Cycles

I've talked before about the moon and how it can effect all living beings and influence certain occurrences and experiences. The new moon, the full moon, and all the waxing and waning in between has powerful effects on everyone and everything, but this post is focussed more specifically on women, and how intrinsically connected our personal cycles are to the cycles of the moon. By nature, women are lunar beings and, when all is as it should be, we sync to the cycles of nature. Today is the full moon, and I am currently on day two of my cycle, but the approach to both has been more intense than usual for me and what seems like all of my female friends, which is what inspired me to write this post. As I struggled with the worst PMS and the lowest, most irrational moods, constant bloating and the worst breakouts since high school, being able to bitch about it with friends that I discovered were going through exactly the same made it more empowering and exciting than frustrating.

As I opened up about constantly low energy levels and uncharacteristic mood swings, each of my female friends reported similar things - entire days spent crying, an unshakable sense of impending doom and foreboding fears. It made me think about how I'd be feeling if I hadn't happened to see them and hadn't had the chance to share these things, and that made me wonder why we don't talk more openly about these things in general. Feeling alone at such a physically and mentally draining stage of each month is the last thing any of us need, so, if you too are having the monthly cycle from hell, read on sister, you are not alone. Below you'll find more info on why we work the way we do, and how you can become more accepting and attuned to your body and mind during this stage of each month. I've also included a few of my own monthly rituals for managing and handling your cycle in more natural ways, which I assure you will reduce unnecessary pain, stress and other common side effects. The more we acknowledge these things and share them with others, the more we can lift each other up and embrace our natural cycles with acceptance and, almost, adoration (you'll see!).

 Syncing

By nature, all living things should be in sync with the cycles of the moon. The same way we adapt to the cycles of the year (ie, seasons), our bodies and minds are also, to some extent, governed by the phases of the moon. As women, it is thought that in a state of homeostasis and natural purity, we menstruate around the new moon and ovulate when the moon is full. However, these days especially, not everyone experiences this, due to ever changing environmental, chemical and dietary factors - many of which are unnatural. The pill, other hormone-altering medication or contraception being one example, and weight, diet, fitness regime and stress being just a few others. When you manage these things more naturally and when you are synced up with the moon, your cycle won't feel like a pain-in-the-vajay, but more an opportunity to let go and go with the flow (literally).

This month seems to have been a particularly intense month for myself and many of female friends and i’d like to add one anecdote in particular which further inspired this post. When I saw one of my oldest friends on Friday I was complaining about my moods and asked how she was feeling. She said she wasn’t feeling it as, currently on the pill, she wasn’t expecting her period for 2 weeks. This morning (Sunday) she texted me saying she’d come on with intense cramps. And that right there is further proof of the power of the moon.

"The new moon is traditionally associated with menstruation and if you find you get your period with the new moon this is known as a White Moon Cycle. The full moon is traditionally associated with ovulation, but some women do get their period on the full moon and this is called a Red Moon Cycle. The White Moon Cycle is the kind that is more commonly experienced. Historically this is down to the impact of light on the Earth and our bodies  – the full moon is the Earth’s most fertile time because of the additional light received by plants when there is bright moonlight as well as sunlight, and this is why it is traditionally associated with the ovulation phase.

Although the White Moon cycle is more common – that’s getting your period on the new moon and ovulating on the full moon – a Red Moon cycle has interesting traditional connotations. Women who experience a Red Moon cycle have historically been thought to be healers, wise women, or medicine women. These women could take care of the other women who were on their period at the time that they themselves were ovulating. It’s also associated with creation in realms other than getting pregnant and having children – when the woman’s focus is on creating art, a business, or a new way of life for herself and others".

How to get more in sync:

+ Download an app to record and track your monthly cycles and notice and understand your personal patterns month by month. This will keep you more aware and more prepared, as well as more understanding of your emotions or energy levels. I use Clue.

+ Refrain from using the contraceptive pill or other methods which unnaturally alter your hormones. I know many people depend of these things for contraception, but it’s much healthier both mentally and physically to just accept more responsibility when it comes to it, and to find a more natural alternative. I use the Clue app, although I know it doesn’t claim accuracy and so I take it upon myself to act responsibly, especially during my fertile window. Many of my friends also use Natural Cycles which is 93% accurate. It includes measuring your temperature daily and inputting your own data into an easy-to-use app, which will then tell you whether you are fertile or not; alerting you whether you should use extra protection to prevent pregnancy or not.

+ Spend more time in nature. In big cities, sometimes it is difficult to even see the moon or find any corner of a natural environment, which is why busy, city people tend to get out of sync than others. 

(Although there are these historical and traditional links, it’s not necessarily important that you get your period on the full moon or the new moon – although it can be pretty exciting when it does happen!).

Stopping

From a young age, we are told to use sanitary products which could in fact be doing more harm than good. Many tampons and pads contain harmful, toxic chemicals and materials, and are thought to have damaging effects inside the body. Tampons are designed to block our natural flow, but whilst our bodies are releasing and detoxing, this isn’t the most ideal or naturally intended idea. 

How to stop it: 

+ Invest in a moon cup / menstrual cup. I could not get used to the idea of them at first, and initially made the change to organic tampons, but as i learnt more about them, the moon cup seemed the most suitable and sensible - not just for my body but also environmentally and economically. Thinx pants also seem fun but I’m yet to get my hands on a pair.

Surrendering
During your cycle, there is a lot going on internally and autonomically, and powering through daily life with low moods and low energy is more or less a disaster waiting to happen. Whether it’s before, during or after your cycle that you feel particularly fragile, sensitive, lethargic etc etc, take time to tune in, explore what’s going on within (hormone or cycle apps truly help not just during your cycle but throughout the rest of the month too) and surrender. Don’t resist what’s going on and don’t force yourself through anything. Go slow.

How to surrender:

+ Condense your schedule and accept that sometimes you just won’t feel up to doing things you usually would, or that you think you should. Once you’ve used a cycle tracker / app for a few months, keeping up to date with your cycle will be easy, and you can then get to know how and when to schedule things in, like time to be active, time to be social and time to do absolutely nothing. Scheduling in naps, slow days and self care rituals is just as important as scheduling in work and fitness.

Soothing

How to soothe: 

+ If you’re someone who suffers from painful periods or endures extreme dizziness, fainting, nausea or other side effects, I can honestly say that switching from tampons to a moon cup reduces cramps and tensions. A friend of mine also uses the Livia - a tech toy which reduces pain.

+ And if you’re someone who suffers from severe mood swings, hormone imbalances and low energy, I’d suggest using adaptogens powders and tonic herbs (see a herbalist if you are not familiar with these) to balance hormones and enhance energy and positivity. I love maca, cacao, pine pollen, he shou wu, ashwaganda, mucuna puriens, ginseng, cordyceps and chaga (I also supplement with magnesium, 5htp and vitamin D if i’m feeling particularly low).

I've never had a very extensive beauty regime, mostly because I never took the time to explore the range of products available and why and how I should use them. I've always had pretty low maintanence skin. Sometimes it's dry and sensitive (usually during winter), and others its oily or prone to an attention-seeking blemish (usually in more humid climates or hormonal imbalances). I have a few trusty products I keep on hand, mostly organic, 100% natural and ethically or locally produced, with the inclusion of a few more technical, bioscientific formulas - especially when on shoots and not in control of what goes on my skin.

When I was a child, I was always down for a session of homemade face masks, and I remember one Christmas what I wanted more than anything was a lip gloss making kit (I know... vom). But although these practices were neither very nourishing or ever very successful, the inspiration to make beauty products from scratch, using ingredients provided freely by the Earth, is what counted. As I've grown up, alongside my favourite beauty products, I like to dip back into these creative rituals, to develop my own unique beauty remedies, personal to my skins specific needs. I edit the choice of essential oils depending on my mood and the current state of my skin, and reduce the intensity of exfoliant ingredients when my skin is particular fragile, or increase it when it's particularly troublesome. Below is my current favourite face and body scrub. It's cheap, it's easy and its messy - but its worth it.

COFFEE, CACAO + ALMOND BODY SCRUB
Lasts about 10 uses

INGREDIENTS
10g Cacao Powder (can also use cocoa)
100g Ground Coffee Beans
20g Coconut Palm Sugar (can also use sand, salt or standard sugar)
2 Tablespoons Almond Oil (can also use Walnut Oil, Avocado Oil, Jojoba Oil or Macadamia Oil)
2 Tablespoons Coconut Oil
10-15 drops Essential Oils of choice - I use ylang ylang, lemongrass, bergamot, cedarwood, jasmine, cinnamon leaf or vanilla. Research online to find the best oils to suit your skin type and also your mood (for aromatherapy uses).

Optional
2 Tablespoons Honey

PROCESS
Measure all the ingredients into a medium bowl and stir to combine with a spatula or a wooden spoon. Transfer to a jar or another pot with a lid and store keep in the bathroom.

RITUALS
Apply in the shower to damp or wet skin. Leave on the skin for 5-10 minutes, or rinse off immediately. Apply to face and body, avoid contact with eyes and be sure to rinse off thoroughly - there'll be coffee in places you didn't even know existed!

A . MY MORNING ROUTINES

My morning routine changes depending on my whereabouts, my current schedule, the seasons and the moon phases (and thus my energy levels) and just generally how I'm feeling from one day to the next. I'm constantly developing and changing and so my rituals and routines are ever evolving too. At the moment, I've found my flow in the following waking morning routine.

1st . Lie in bed for a couple of minutes with my boyfriend, check my phone, think about the day ahead and / or positive aspects and gratitude attention practice (I don't journal or write these things down in the mornings, I just spend a few minutes thinking about the positive aspects of my life, and focussing on all I have each morning and all I am grateful for.

2nd . Head to the bathroom (via the kettle - to fill and activate it), spend about a 30 seconds tongue scraping with an ayurvedic tongue scraper and doing whatever else needs doing in there.

3rd . Glass of cold water.

4th . Hot drink - either an adaptogen in hot water or plant based m*lk, or a simple lemon, ginger and turmeric juice cocktail with hot water.

5th . 20 minutes mantra meditation, with said drink at hand. (Sometimes 5 minutes, sometimes 10 minutes, I aim for 20 though).

6th . Nauli Kriya.

7th . Morning stretch sequences or full 1 hour yoga sequence at home. I usually replace this with   a local yoga, boxing, or hiit class, depending on my mood and level of meditation.

8th . Home or my studio to begin work and whatever else the day holds.
