Recipes, rituals, research and other stories to realign the body and mind

For me, beauty is a major part of wellbeing. Not only does it affect our confidence and how we are often perceived and judged, our external appearance indicates our general state of wellbeing. Whatever is going on on the surface of our skin is an extension of what is going on internally, be that physically, physiologically and even mentally. Our skin is a powerful and wise transportation system and, when operating efficiently, acts as a pathway into deeper internal and external wellness, keeping us connected and protected. It protects our bones and muscles, and also allows good substances into the body whilst keeping harmful ones out.

Aside from eating well in order to strengthen the skin and keep the body 'clean', there are many natural products which can also assist the skin in its natural renewal cycles, in standing as a strong and protective barrier, and in soothing any damage caused by external toxins and pollutants. As well as adopting a balanced diet and cutting down on 'clogging' foods, swapping chemical-laden beauty products with more natural ones is an essential step in taking better care of your skin and what's going on beneath the surface. Our skin is incredibly absorbent, and almost anything you put on it will end up being absorbed in the bloodstream. Some substances are designed to contribute to cellular activity for growth and renewal, but more harmful, unnecessary substances are likely to cause further irritation.

We are constantly sold so many products that we are cleverly made to believe that we need, but in most cases, we don't need much at all, and what we do need is often something extremely simple. I love to make natural beauty remedies from scratch using essential oils and organic cosmetic fats or creams, but when I can't, I turn to a selection of natural, nourishing products. Some are more natural than others but, whilst I try to opt for all-natural, all-organic and ethical and sustainable products, it just isn't always possible. As a model, especially, I don't always have the choice when it comes to my own hair and make up, but when I do, I rear as far away from commercial products and opt for those with more of a purpose, ideally from small-batch, independent producers that use good quality, pure or organic ingredients.
